Chapter 7: Nine Hundred a Month

The lawyer was a brisk woman in a grey suit who had a pen in her hair and a framed photo of a retriever on her desk.

She had read the filing before I sat down.

"Your husband petitioned for divorce this morning," she said. "He's asking for the house, his shares, and a finding that your grandmother's money was a gift to the business."

"It was a loan. I have the note."

"I've seen the note. It's good." She tapped the folder. "It's also the only paper he can't talk his way around. Everything else, he'll fight with accountants and a lot of noise. So you need the company's records before he starts hiding them."

"I have the books. I kept them."

"You have what's on the shared drive. Do you have the file cabinets? Bank letters, signed minutes, anything with a wet signature?"

I thought of the records room at the back of the warehouse.

I had the only copy of the key to the top drawer, and Graeme had the rest.

"I'll get them," I said.

"Do it this week," she said. "And Mrs. Colter, don't sleep in that house. Don't go back for a sweater. Anything you take, photograph first."

I had not planned to go back.

I had a bag in my mother's guest room and a laptop with a sticky keyboard.

That afternoon I signed a lease on the one-bedroom apartment above the bakery on Third Street, because the landlord was a client of ours and had taken my call on the first ring.

The rent was nine hundred dollars.

I paid the deposit out of my own savings account, the one I had opened at twenty-two and never told Graeme the balance of.
