Chapter 4: The Fitting
On Monday morning Massimo handed her a phone across the breakfast table.
It was cheap and black, with a cracked corner, and her old number was already in it.
"Yours was in my father's desk," he said. "I couldn't get the passport. The phone's clean now."
"How do you know it's clean?"
"Because I took it apart myself."
Wynne turned it over in her hands.
"Thank you," she said, and then, because she was irritated that she had said it twice in one day, "Where are we going?"
"You have a fitting at eleven."
"I'm not wearing a dress for him."
"You're going to the tailor's, with your mother and my father's driver, and you're going to say nothing and smile." He drank his coffee. "I'll be in the car outside. If you want out, you touch your left ear."
"That's a signal?"
"It's a signal."
She almost smiled.
The tailor's shop was on Passyunk, with white lace in the window and a bell on the door that was much too bright.
Her mother was already inside in a pale blue coat, holding a cup of tea she was not drinking.
"Honey," Rosanna said, and kissed her cheek.
Her lips were cold and dry.
The dress was ivory silk with long sleeves.
The tailor, a small woman with pins in her mouth, said it was an excellent choice because the sleeves would cover everything, and she did not say it unkindly.
Rosanna stood behind Wynne at the mirror and began to do up the buttons, one at a time, from the waist up.
"You look like a bride," her mother said softly.
"I look like somebody's evidence."
