Chapter 5: Ice and Gauze
She told him about the recording in the car, and he drove the whole way home without speaking.
In the east wing he took the phone from her, turned it over, thumbed the back off, and looked at the small chip inside for a long moment.
"It's clean," he said. "It's mine. I built it Sunday night."
"Then who cleared it?"
"My father's house runs one network." He put the back on. "Anything that touches it, he can reach. I should have used a number that never came inside."
"You said it was clean."
"I was wrong, and I don't say that often." He set the phone on the desk. "Don't use it in the house again."
"Then how do I record anything?"
"You don't." His eyes lifted to hers. "You stay out of reach of Fabrizio, and you let me handle it."
"No."
"Wynne."
"I stood in front of the capos, Massimo," she said. "It's my name on the sit-down. If I let you handle it, I have nothing to bring Friday except a bruise and a story."
He looked at her for a while.
"You bring the bruise," he said. "I'll find the rest."
She went to bed angry and did not sleep.
At one in the morning she gave up and went to the bathroom to run cold water on her wrist.
The gauze had come loose at the edge and was dragging across the skin.
It had started to throb again, up to the elbow, and her fingers were tingling.
When she came out, the hall light was on.
Massimo was in the doorway of his study with his sleeves rolled up and a glass of water in his hand.
