Chapter 6: Route 1
Massimo looked at the photograph of her window for a long time.
He did not say a word, and then he put his fist through the plaster beside the study door.
"Sit down," he said afterward, pulling out the chair. "Please. I need to think."
"You broke your wall."
"It's my wall."
"Your hand is bleeding."
"It's the same hand. It'll live." He wrapped a handkerchief around his knuckles. "Fabrizio had a woman before you."
Wynne waited.
"Four years ago. She was nineteen, a waitress at the restaurant. He put a ring on her too. She left the engagement and the city three months in, and nobody on the Hill asked why." He tied the handkerchief off with his teeth. "I knew. I helped her go."
"You knew?"
"I was twenty-seven. My father laughed it off, and I let it be a thing that happened." His voice was very level. "I told myself it was over. Then he sent me to Naples for three weeks and announced your engagement while I was gone."
"He sent you away."
"Yes."
"On purpose."
Massimo didn't answer.
His eyes had gone to the pantry square on the laptop, where a man in a cardigan was cutting an apple.
"She lives in Trenton now," he said. "She'll speak to me. If she'll speak to the capos Friday, the sit-down is over before it starts."
"Then take me."
"You're not leaving the wing."
"You said rule one. I go downstairs only with you. So I'm going with you."
His mouth moved.
It was nearly a laugh, and it died fast.
"My father will have a driver on every door," he said. "I'd have to take you out through the garden."
"I know where the garden gate is."
"Of course you do."
They left at six that morning, over the back wall by the lemon tree, with Massimo's hands under her sneaker and the sky going gray.
