Chapter 18: New Year's Day
"Not one dollar, Mama," I said.
I walked past her to the Buick.
Quinton opened the back door for Nana and the front door for me, and we left my mother standing in the wet parking lot in her gold dress with Brady's keys.
At ten the next morning a white jet sat on the little runway at Tyler Pounds with STUYVESANT on its tail in small gray letters.
Nana stopped at the bottom of the stairs with her cane.
"Son," she said. "I've been on one airplane in my life, in 1971, and it didn't have a couch."
"This one has two."
"Lord help me." She started up the steps. "If I like it, don't tell anybody."
She liked it.
She fell asleep on the first couch before we were over Arkansas, with a blanket over her knees and a glass of sherry the flight attendant had poured her at ten-fifteen in the morning.
Quinton wanted her out of Tyler until Thursday.
So did I.
The penthouse was warm, and the twelve-foot tree was still lit in the corner.
Nana stood in the middle of the living room and turned in a slow circle on her cane.
The glass. The frozen lake. The white sofas.
"Who decorated that tree?" she said. "A bank?"
"A company," said Quinton.
"It looks like a bank." She poked a silver ornament with her cane. "Next year you cut one down yourself."
"Yes, ma'am."
His security chief had the guest suite ready for her at the far end of the hall.
It had its own sitting room and a bathtub with jets, and Nana took one look at the tub and shut the door in our faces.
"I'll be in here till Thursday," she called through it. "Bring me supper."
That night it was just the two of us at the long kitchen island, eating cold Chinese food out of the cartons.
Outside, the lake was black, and the city lights went all the way down the shore.
Tomorrow at eight he'd walk into a boardroom and either take his grandfather's company back or lose it.
