Chapter 20: The Price

I didn't sit down beside her.

I stood in front of the marble bench with my coat still buttoned.

"You have Nana," I said. "You had her for four years. You had me for twenty-seven."

"Don't."

"You had Daddy."

My mother's mouth went thin.

"Don't you lecture me about your father in a lobby."

"Then I won't lecture." I took a breath. "I'll tell you what it costs."

She looked up at me.

For the first time in my life, my mother waited for me to speak.

"Sunday," I said. "First Methodist, the eleven o'clock. You stand up at the front, in front of the whole town, and you tell them what you did to this family. In your own words, with Pastor standing there, and no notes."

"You've lost your mind."

"Two. You sign Nana's power of attorney back to Nana. Monday morning, at the lawyer's, and I'll be there."

"Katie."

"Three. Daddy's name goes back on the sign. Verrill Ford, with his first name on it, the way it was."

The security guard behind the desk was very busy with his monitor.

My mother laughed.

It wasn't her party laugh. It was a short, ugly thing.

"And if I do all that?" she said. "What do I get?"

"You get to come to Sunday dinner at the cottage," I said. "Sometimes. If Nana says so."
