Four Deacons Drove Out My Father, So I Brought Them to Their Knees novel · Chapter 24 of 24
Chapter 24: The Porch Light
I had Isaiah on my mother's kitchen table before the other three had finished hanging up their hats.
The peg by the door still held his gray fedora.
Lucius had driven three more nails into the wall that afternoon, and three hats hung beside it.
A fourth chair sat at the table where the sheet had been.
I had taken down the calendar in November and hung a new one, turned to April.
The porch light shone yellow through the curtains.
"Out," I said to the others. "Front room. I'll call you."
"Yes, ma'am," Lucius said, grinning, and herded them out.
Isaiah stood in the middle of the kitchen with his jacket already off.
"Come here," I said.
He came.
I hitched myself up onto the table where I had sat the first night, and I pulled him in by the collar.
I kissed him slowly, and he kissed me back, and his hands went to my zipper.
"Do you remember what you said?" I asked him. "I said I was sure of you on your knees."
"I remember."
"You've been on your knees for me four times."
"Five," Isaiah said. "I count the church."
I laughed against his mouth.
"I am sure of you," I said. "Standing up."
His face changed.
He unzipped my dress and slid it off my shoulders, and I let it pool on the tabletop.
He took off my bra and kissed each breast, and the gold tooth was cool against my skin.
I pulled his shirt open and kissed the old healed bite on his shoulder, and I licked it.
I undid his belt.
He stepped out of his trousers and stood in front of me bare and gray-haired and solid, with his cock thick and curving up.
I took it in my hand and stroked him, and he shut his eyes.
"Naomi."
"Look at me."
He looked.
I slid off the table and knelt on the kitchen floor in front of him.
"Naomi, you need not..."
"I know what I need."
I took him in my mouth slowly and tasted salt and the peppermint he always carried.
He put one hand on the table and one in my twists, very gently.
I sucked him with my eyes up, and I watched him try not to close his.
