Chapter 8: Dawn in the Kitchen
Dominik did not say another word.
He sat on the edge of my bed for ten minutes, close enough that I could smell the cold ice water on his hands.
I gave him nothing. I gave him my loose mouth and my steady breath, and I counted the seconds against the ticking of the hall clock.
At last the mattress rose.
"We'll see," he said softly, to the dark. "We'll see who is lying to whom."
He pulled my underwear up with two careful fingers and tugged my shirt straight.
The lock turned behind him.
I did not sleep.
At five I crept down the attic stairs in my socks.
The kitchen light was on. I stopped on the third step from the bottom, where the wall hid me, and I listened.
"She's awake," Dominik said.
"She's asleep," Florian said. "You should have seen her at the party. She was out before we reached the stairs."
"I watched her eyelids move for two minutes."
"Dreaming!"
"Nobody dreams on schedule."
A mug hit the table hard.
"Then why does she look at me like nothing happened?" Dominik demanded. "Every morning. She says she remembers the cake and nothing else. Does that sound like a woman who slept through three nights of us?"
"It sounds like a woman who doesn't remember," Vincent said evenly. "That's what the pills do."
"Show me the pills."
Nobody moved.
"Show me, Vincent."
A drawer scraped. I heard the plastic cutter clatter on the counter, and the bottle rattle, and then a long silence.
"Five tablets," Dominik said. "I bought forty. I told you to give her one, a whole one, on the night. Five pills, cut into ten halves."
