Chapter 9: Candles

That night Dominik lit candles.

I heard the match scrape, and I smelled the wax before I opened my eyes a crack to see.

He had set three of them on the dresser, and he sat in the wooden chair by my bed with his big scarred hands hanging between his knees.

I lay in my clothes with the covers up to my chin and played the sleeper.

He had not poured wine at dinner. He had not said a word to me at all.

I had eaten my plate of potatoes and walked up the stairs, and every one of them had watched me go.

"Lena," Dominik said.

I did not move.

"I know you might be awake. I would rather say it to you awake. But I don't have the courage, so I'm going to say it to you like this."

My phone was under my pillow, recording.

I had slid it there an hour ago, with my thumb on the red dot and my breath held.

"Five months ago you came up the drive in the rain with two suitcases and a cardboard box," he said. "You asked me if the room was really only four hundred euros. You thought there was a catch."

His voice was rough and slow.

"I said no, there was no catch. And I looked at you standing on my porch with water running off your chin, and I thought: I am in trouble."

Candle flames shivered.

"I didn't plan this. I want you to believe that. I wanted to ask you to dinner. I wanted to do it properly. But you were always working. You were always tired. Florian made jokes about you, and Felix could not stop staring at you, and Vincent counted your steps on the stairs. We all wanted you."
