Chapter 18: Spring

I read the chat line three times.

Green heart was her idea.

"Where did you get this?"

"The house group chat. I muted it in September and never opened it again." He looked at the seat back in front of him. "I scrolled up the night my father cut me off. I had nothing else to do on that cot."

"And the merger file?"

"He called me to his office in Boston. He said I could have everything back if I signed one paper agreeing to the engagement." Linc rubbed his scraped thumb. "The disclosure binder was on the table. He told me to read it so I'd know what I was signing."

"So you read it."

"I read it. Then I put it under my arm and walked out without signing anything."

"Linc, you had this on December nineteenth."

"Yes."

"You've had it for two weeks. On my dad's roof. At Christmas."

"Yes." He finally looked at me. "I didn't want to show up at your door with a folder. I didn't want you to think the work was a trade."

The bus hummed through the snow.

I closed the folder on my lap.

"It's not yours to hand to the trustees," I said. "It's mine. I'll bring it myself."
