Chapter 17: Snowed In

He had me against the door before the snow stopped melting on his shoulders.

I had opened it to say something clever.

I never said it, because his mouth came down on mine, cold and hard and tasting of coffee and the road, and I grabbed two fistfuls of his coat.

"You drove a hundred and sixty miles in a blizzard," I said into his mouth.

"Somebody else drove," he said.

"With a machine in your chest."

"With a seat belt, Millie, and a man from the yard who thinks I'm mad." He kissed my jaw. "He's asleep on your father's couch. Your father gave him rum."

"You tore it up."

"I told you I did."

"Say it again," I said.

"I tore it up," he said, against my throat. "I tore it into forty pieces and I posted them to a woman who owes me nothing."

I pulled him in by the lapels and kissed him until neither of us could breathe.

The stove roared at the back of the kitchen.

The red light moved over the wall, and the wind threw snow at the glass, and I got his coat off him one arm at a time, taking care with the left.

"Slowly," I said.

"I've been slow for forty days."

"You'll be slower."

I pulled his jumper over his head, and his shirt after it.

His skin was cold and rough with gooseflesh, and the seam under his collarbone was dark in the firelight.

I put my lips beside it, not on it, and he shuddered.

"I'm so angry with you," I said.

"I know."

"I'm still going to fuck you."

"I'm counting on it," he said.

I took his hand and led him across the kitchen to the rug in front of the stove.

It was a braided rug my grandmother had made from her husband's old trousers, thick and worn and warm underfoot.

I pulled the quilt off the settle and threw it down.

He stood at the edge of it while I undressed him.

I unbuckled his belt and opened his trousers and knelt to take off his boots, one and then the other.

He stepped out of his trousers and stood naked in front of the fire with the light on his chest.

I stripped off my own jumper and my jeans and left them where they fell.

Then I lay down on the quilt on my side, with my back to the stove, and held out my hand.

He lay down facing me.

He took care to settle on his right side, with his left arm tucked low along his body, and we stared at each other from a hand's width apart.
