Chapter 18: The Test
Lorcan's POV
I walked into the genetics clinic at seven on a Tuesday morning, and I did not write anything down.
The waiting room had six chairs, a rubber plant and a poster about family histories.
I sat under the poster in my good coat and read it twice.
Twelve years.
I had walked past that clinic's door at the Health Sciences Centre more times than I could count, and I had gone to the cafeteria instead.
The counsellor was a woman in her fifties with grey hair and a plain voice.
She had a thin file on her desk, and I knew whose name was on it.
"Your brother's result is on record," she said. "So we only look for the one change, the one that ran in your family. It's a single blood test."
"How long?" I said.
"Nine days."
"And if it's positive?"
"Then we know," she said. "Which is the difference between what you have now and what you've had for twelve years."
I rolled up my left sleeve, which I was allowed to do now.
The six weeks had ended on the tenth.
The needle went in, and two tubes filled, dark red.
I watched my own blood run into a glass and felt nothing but relief.
At the door, I turned round.
"I have a daughter," I said. "She's thirteen months old. I want her checked."
"Children aren't tested for this until they are eighteen, unless there are symptoms," the counsellor said. "It's her decision to make then, not yours. But an annual heart ultrasound and an ECG can start at one."
