Chapter 19: The Desk
Millie's POV
Sadie's heart was perfect.
The cardiologist at the Janeway told us so at four o'clock on the first Thursday of March, in a room with a giraffe on the wall.
Lorcan read the report four times in the car.
I drove, because he was not allowed on the road until April.
He sat in his own passenger seat holding a sheet of paper and looking out of the window.
"Take me to the yard," he said.
"Now?" I said.
"I've never shown you where I sit."
Hann Marine stood on the South Side behind a chain fence, with two cranes and a dry dock and a supply ship up on blocks.
A man in a hut by the gate waved us through without looking up.
Nan had Sadie for the night, and Lorcan had a key to a door on the second floor.
His office ran the width of the building, and the whole of one wall was glass.
The Narrows lay below it, black and narrow, between the cliffs.
The lights of the harbour were on the water, and the dark bulk of Signal Hill stood over everything.
A long oak desk faced the window, with a green lamp and a ledger and a brass model of a ship.
He reached for the lamp.
"Leave it," I said.
His hand stopped.
I pushed the ledger back and sat on the edge of his desk with my feet off the floor.
I crooked one finger.
He crossed the room slowly in the dark.
He wore a charcoal suit and a dark tie, with the harbour lights behind me on his face, and he looked like the man who had walked into my shop in November.
