Henrik's POV
I had asked for the dark so that no woman would have to look at my face.
She had been looking at it for twenty months.
She stood on the Sea Lark's pier in my wet shirt and her ruined coat, with her braid coming apart, and she did not look at the boat.
She looked at me.
"Tell me what you heard," she said.
"Not here," I said. "Come aboard."
"Here."
I had practiced this for twenty months, in the wheelhouse, at night, and none of it was any use.
"The Mary Rae called first," I said. "She was three miles from us, going down by the head, with four men aboard."
"I know about the Mary Rae."
"Ten minutes later your father called."
She did not move.
"He gave a position nineteen miles south of the Sea Lark," I said. "His GPS had failed. He was working it by dead reckoning, and he was nine miles off."
"The Coast Guard report says that."
"Nobody here read the report."
