Chapter 17: The Shack
The Aunt took my sister and the pup to the Kitchen's house at first light.
By noon I could not stand to be in the cabin.
I could not stop seeing Larisa's face.
I could not stop hearing the word lied.
So I took Axel by the sleeve and walked him out across the lake to the fishing shack.
It was a plywood box the size of a closet, painted green, with a tin stovepipe and a door that stuck.
Inside there was a bunk, a camp stove and two buckets.
A round hole in the floor showed black water under a skin of new ice.
Axel lit the stove.
I shut the door and dropped the bar.
"Talya," he said. "You're shaking."
"I'm not cold."
"Then what is it?" he said.
"I need you to make me stop thinking."
He looked at me in the dim light, and his face changed.
He did not ask what I wanted.
He only sat down on the edge of the bunk and held out his hand.
I took off my coat first.
Then my boots, and my sweater, and my jeans.
The little stove was hot on one side of me.
The cold came up through the floor, and the black water stirred in the hole.
I stood in front of him naked.
He sat there fully dressed with his hands on his knees.
He looked at me, and I was the only light in the shack.
"Lie back," I said.
He lay back on the bunk.
It was narrow, and it creaked, and his boots hung off the end.
I climbed up over him and straddled his chest.
I put my knees on either side of his head.
"Talya."
"I want to sit on your face."
His eyes went black.
"Tell me how," he said.
"I'll show you."
I shuffled up the bunk on my knees until I hovered over his mouth.
I put one hand on the plywood wall and the other in his hair.
His beard brushed the insides of my thighs.
I felt his breath on me, hot and uneven.
