Chapter 17: The Strap

At two o'clock that afternoon I knocked on the balcony door of Room 15 and told him the terms.

Rhett sat on the edge of his bed with his camera across his knees and the phone beside him, and he listened with his head down.

"One photograph," I said. "Tripp asked for faces, so he gets faces, and I choose the angle."

"Rochelle."

"You'll set the timer and put the camera on the rail. You'll send it by four with a message that says the set is complete."

"And the money?"

"He wires it, and you keep it."

He lifted his head.

"I don't want it."

"I didn't ask what you wanted." I crossed the room and stood over him. "Your father's bed closes at five today, you said. You'll take it, and you'll pay the home, and it will be the only thing you ever do with his money."

He looked at me for a long time.

"All right," he said.

"I'm not finished. Camille will be on the sand with that lens. She'll take her own."

"I know."

"Let her. Let them both have a picture of exactly what they asked for." I took the camera off his knees and set it on the pillow. "By tomorrow it's proof that they ordered it."

"You'd stand in front of that lens for him."

"I'd stand in front of it for me."

He started to say something, and I put two fingers over his mouth.

His breath was warm on them.

I hated that I noticed.

"Sit back," I said.
