Chapter 16: All-Hands
The Lindqvist auditorium seats four hundred, and on Thursday morning every seat was full.
I sat in the front row beside Floyd in my good black dress.
Hank sat on my other side with a battered brown box on his knees.
He had not told me what was in it.
On the stage there was a long table with a pitcher of water, the chief executive in the middle and the HR director on his right.
On his left sat Lindqvist's lawyer, and beside the lawyer, in a pastel blazer with her gold bracelet on, sat Kelsey.
She was on leave.
She was also, the chief executive had announced, "the complainant and a harmed party," and so she had a chair.
She looked at me and mouthed, I'm sorry.
I looked at the water pitcher.
"We are here," the chief executive said, "because a serious allegation was made against one of our senior adjusters. I believe in doing hard things in the open."
He did not look at me when he said it.
The lawyer stood and put two enlarged pages on the screen behind him.
They were the February and April approval letters.
"Both surgeries were approved by the reviewing adjuster, whose signature you see here," the lawyer said. "The adjuster was the patient's partner."
A giant letter M glowed on the wall, six feet high.
Four hundred people looked at it.
"Ms. Pembroke, did you sign these?" the lawyer asked.
"No."
"Do you deny that this is your signature?"
"It looks like my signature. I didn't write it."
"Who did?"
"I don't know."
"You don't know," the lawyer repeated gently, and he let it hang.
I heard whispering behind me.
