Chapter 16: The Visitor
The visitor chose a diner in Gardner, on the old highway, with a gravel lot and a grain elevator behind it.
He said it on the phone in four sentences, and the last one was, "Bring the girl."
Aurelio said, "No."
The man in Chicago said, "Then I'll drive home and call your uncle."
Aurelio looked at me, and I nodded.
We went at dusk in the green truck, the same day.
My mother's cousin's pickup was back in the yard when we left, with her rosary hanging from the mirror.
She had come home from the church in Gardner and gone straight into the kitchen, and I told her through the screen door where we were going.
She said only, "Take a sweater."
I forgot it, and she saw me forget it from the kitchen window.
The diner had six booths, a pie case, and a waitress with a pencil behind her ear.
The man from the Sunday table sat in the last booth with his back to the wall, a heavy gray-haired man in a camel coat, with a cup of black coffee and a slice of lemon meringue untouched in front of him.
There was no one with him.
He watched us come down the aisle with his small shrewd eyes.
He did not stand up.
"Mr. Candela," he said. "Miss."
We sat across from him, Aurelio on the outside, me against the wall.
The waitress brought two cups and went away.
"I'll be quick," the visitor said. "I drove nine hours, and I don't like Kansas."
"You didn't drive nine hours for pie," Aurelio said.
"No." He turned his cup a quarter-turn on the saucer. "Your uncle called Chicago on Monday. He said the family's heir was unwell. He said it would be a few months, maybe more, before you were fit to sit the Sunday table, and he asked if my people would deal with him in the meantime."
