Chapter 18: The Banker's Box

It was Cosima.

She stood on the concrete walk under the buzzing yellow light in her charcoal blazer, with the collar turned up.

She held a cardboard banker's box against her chest with both arms.

There was a rental car at the curb behind her with the trunk open.

Her black bob was flattened on one side as if she had slept in the car, and she had no glasses on.

She looked at the lamp in her brother's fist.

"Put that down," she said. "I'm not here to hit you."

Aurelio put it on the bed.

I pulled the towel tighter and stepped out from behind him.

"How did you find us?" he said.

"The truck is the only thing you've ever owned," Cosima said. "It's registered to Father's estate. I keep the estate."

"Gaetano knows that."

"Gaetano fired me at four o'clock this afternoon."

She said it flatly.

She walked past him into the room and set the box on the bed, and sat down beside it, very straight, with her hands on her knees.

"He called me into the house on Gladstone and sat me in the chair across from his desk," she said. "He said he was very sorry. He said I had been loose-tongued, and a girl who talks to the Orozco family in a rented car is a girl who has to retire."

She did not blink.

"He gave me ten minutes to clear the office. He had a man stand at the door."
