Chapter 14: Camille Makes an Offer

The diner on Van Brunt Street had six booths, a counter and a pie case with a cracked door.

I took the booth at the back and set my phone against the napkin holder with the screen face down.

The recording was already running.

Caleb sat in his truck across the street, where I could see the roof of the cab through the window.

Camille came in at one minute to eight.

She wore a cream coat and dark glasses, and she took them off slowly at the table.

They were red at the rims.

She had been crying, or she wanted me to think so.

"Thank you for coming," she said. "I know I'm the last person you want to see."

"The waitress will be over in a minute," I said. "Have the pie."

She laughed, a little too quickly.

Then she opened her handbag and laid a long white envelope on the table between the salt and the sugar.

"I'll say it plainly, because you'd rather I did," Camille said. "That's a cashier's check for two million dollars."

I looked at it and did not touch it.

"In your name. Today. Clean." She folded her hands. "Landon would withdraw the custody petition by noon, and he'd give you the apartment outright and a settlement on top."

"What does he get?"

"The pages. Signed, in this booth. And the divorce quiet."

"And Max?"

She took her time with that one.

"There's a school in Connecticut," she said. "Small. Beautiful grounds. They have a harbor program, Joanna. He could watch boats all day, with people trained to understand him."

My hands were flat on the table, and I kept them there.

"You've looked into it."
