Chapter 17: The Lawyer
I read it twice.
Then I sat up and pulled the sheet with me.
"Visitation," I said. "With Lisette as her witness."
"She hasn't filed yet."
"She will. Your mother does what she says. She did it with the investigator."
He was already dialing.
It rang five times and went to voicemail.
He dialed again.
I put my hand over the phone.
"Don't," I said. "Not like this. Not at six in the morning with your shirt off."
He looked at me.
Then, slowly, he put the phone face down on the nightstand.
"Lisette will sit in a courtroom," he said, "and tell a judge what you are."
"She's been telling people what I am for four years," I said. "This time she has to do it under oath."
I put on his white dress shirt from the floor.
My dress had a zipper, and I wasn't asking for help with it.
I crossed the garden barefoot at 6:30 in the morning.
Ollie was on the carriage house step with a mug of coffee.
