Chapter 18: The Drive
Ollie called the owner before the lawyer had even hung up.
He put it on speaker on the counter.
An old man's voice answered on the sixth ring, cranky and full of sleep.
"Bramlett? You owe me a microphone stand."
"I know. I'm sorry. Do you still have the camera drives from the old hall?"
There was a long pause.
"Son," the owner said, "I have every receipt since 1989. Of course I have the drives."
The old studio on upper King Street was a vinyl shop now.
I stood on the sidewalk on Wednesday morning and looked at the window full of record sleeves.
"You okay?" Ollie said.
"No," I said, and went in.
The hall was still the hall.
The record bins ran down both sides where the coat rack and the couches used to be.
The red exit sign was still over the back door.
On the right, where Studio B had been, there was a door marked STAFF ONLY.
On the left was the booking office.
Waist-high wall. Glass above it. The same blinds, yellowed now.
I stood where I'd stood at one in the morning, four years ago, with Ollie's arm around me.
