Chapter 19: The Mother's Turn

Jameson didn't answer her.

He just stood by the mantel with his hands behind his back, the way he'd stood at the foot of Benji's bed.

His mother looked up at me.

Her face was gray under the powder.

"You knew," she said. "When I came with the check. You knew then."

"I knew she had a key," I said. "I didn't have this."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"You'd have believed her."

She opened her mouth to argue.

Then she closed it.

"Yes," she said quietly. "I would have."

She looked down at her hands.

"Four thousand dollars. And the man only wrote down what she'd already told me. I paid him to agree with me."

"Mother," Jameson said. "Nobody can know about this. Not your attorney. Not the bridge table. Not until a judge sees it."

"I understand."

"Do you?"

She lifted her chin at him. For a second she looked exactly like him.

"I'm not a fool, Jameson. I've been made one. It's different."

She stood up.

"Come tomorrow at three," she said to me. "Bring the boy. Please."
