Chapter 31: Birthday
Hayes backed the truck up to the gate so fast the gravel sprayed.
I got Chelsea into the back seat and climbed in after her.
Patty threw the box in on the floor and slammed the door.
Dustin took one step toward the truck.
"I should come. Chelsea, I should..."
"No," Chelsea said through the window.
Patty stepped in front of him and closed the gate.
"You heard her," Patty said.
The regional hospital in Traverse City was forty minutes away.
Hayes made it in twenty-eight.
I was in the back with my sister's head on my shoulder and her nails in my wrist.
"I'm not ready," she kept saying. "He's not ready. It's September."
"He's ready enough. He's a Buckley. We're early for everything."
"You're not a Buckley."
"I am today."
She laughed and then screamed through a contraction and then laughed again.
Hayes didn't say a word the whole drive. Once, at a red light, he reached back without turning around and put his hand on my knee.
They took her straight up.
At the door to the delivery room, a nurse stopped me.
