Chapter 17: The Saddlebag

Boone's POV

Lena shook me awake at five with the duffel bag open on the quilt.

"The envelope's gone," she said. "My blood work. The printout with the heartbeat."

I sat up.

The lamp was off, and the window was gray, and she stood there in my shirt with her braid half undone.

"Who was in the house?" I said.

"You. Me. Rafe carried this bag in from the truck and set it in the hall."

"Rafe didn't open your bag."

"I didn't say he did." She looked at me. "I said who was in the house."

I got dressed in the dark.

"There's a deputy parked at the foot of the ridge," I told her. "Birdie's cousin put him there. Lock the door behind me, and don't open it for anyone."

"Not even you?"

"I'll knock three times."

She almost smiled, and I kissed her forehead and went.

I took the truck down the ridge road and nodded to the deputy asleep behind his wheel.

Then I drove to the clubhouse, because Joelle's people were the only ones I could think of who would want those papers.

A black SUV sat in the lot.

It was the one from outside the lawyer's office, and the man who drove it was leaning against the fender with a cigarette.

He saw my face and dropped it.

"Mr. Gallagher, please."

I hit him once in the stomach, and he folded.

I pulled him up by his collar and put him against the door.

"The envelope," I said. "You or your boss. Where is it?"

"I don't know what envelope." He was wheezing. "I've been here all night, I swear on my mother. Miss Dawes sent me to watch the clubhouse. I never went near your house."
