Chapter 23: The Grade
Rafe would not say it in the clubhouse.
"Not here," he said, holding a bar towel to his jaw. "Not with forty ears in the walls. Take me to the grade, and I'll show you."
The road captain drove.
Boone sat in the passenger seat of the old pickup with his jaw set, and I sat in the middle of the back seat with Rafe on my left.
I took my phone out of my pocket and turned on the recorder.
Rafe saw me do it.
He looked at the phone, and then at me.
"Good," he said thickly. "Get it."
The Cutbank grade climbed out of the valley in six long switchbacks with a guardrail on the drop side.
The captain pulled into a gravel turnout at the fourth bend and shut off the engine.
The guardrail there was newer than the rest.
The steel was bright, and the posts were set in raw concrete.
Boone got out and stood looking at it for a long time.
"Mile marker forty-one," Rafe said. "That's where he went through."
"I know where he went through," Boone said. "I came to identify the bike."
"I was riding lead that day." Rafe's words slurred around the swelling. "Dutch was three bike lengths back. Amos had called a council on the far side of the pass, and Dutch said he wouldn't go, and then he said he would. Amos was already ahead in his truck. Or I thought he was."
"Go on," I said.
"At the third switchback I checked my mirror. Dutch was behind me. And behind Dutch there was a dark truck, running no lights, close on his rear fender."
He pressed the towel to his mouth.
"It was Amos's. I knew the silver on the mirror. I saw his face through the windshield. He had both hands on the wheel."
