He Crowned Her Luna. The Moon Crowned Me. novel · Chapter 4 of 24

Chapter 4: Dawn at the Stone

The Stone stands on the meadow above the packhouse, a gray slab of granite as tall as two men.

At dawn there was mist in the grass and a thin line of pink over the ridge.

Four hundred wolves had climbed the hill in their coats and boots to watch their Luna give up her seat.

I had not slept.

I stood at the foot of the Stone in yesterday's dress and a borrowed jacket of Maisy's.

My left wrist was bare, and I kept it down at my side.

Heath stood on one side of the slab in his good black coat.

Verity stood behind him, leaning on her cane, and beside her was Imogen with the crown on her head.

She wouldn't look at me.

Torben had come up the hill with Maisy and stopped at the edge of the crowd, with his hands in his pockets and his eyes on me.

I had told him to stay there, and he had.

"We gather at the Stone," Heath said, in the voice he used for ceremonies. "Margo Castelnaud has served as Luna for five years. Today she lays down her seat by her own word, as the law requires."

He stepped back and gestured.

"Margo."

The ritual was simple.

The Luna put her palm flat on the granite and spoke the release.

I walked up to the Stone, and I did not touch it.

I turned around and faced the pack instead.

A low rustle went through the crowd.

"I have a question first," I said. "Then I'll answer the Alpha."

Heath's smile didn't move.

"Margo, this isn't the time."

"It's the only time. The law says a Luna's seat can pass by her word or by the Moon." I looked at the faces in the front rows. "Last night the Alpha told you the Moon showed him his mate."
