Chapter 5: Guest-Right
"I want out of here," I said.
I said it quietly, but the whole meadow could hear.
"I want Maisy with me, and I want nobody laying a hand on either of us. I'll come back when I choose, and I'll say what I have to say when I'm ready."
Torben nodded once.
Then he turned to face four hundred Ridgemoor wolves and spoke loudly enough for the back rows.
"I am Torben Roake, Alpha of Blackfern. Under the treaty of the pass, I claim Margo Fontenay and Maisy Tarrant as my guests."
Heath's face changed.
"You can't," he said.
"I just did."
"She's my wife."
"She's a woman who said no to you in front of her pack," Torben said. "Guest-right doesn't ask who's married to whom. It asks whether the host stands behind his guest, and I do."
A hush came down on the meadow.
I knew the old law, though I had never seen it used.
A wolf under another Alpha's guest-right could not be seized on pack land.
If Heath touched either of us now, he would be breaking a treaty older than he was.
"Blackfern has a hundred and fifty wolves," Heath said. "Ridgemoor has four hundred."
"Then you'll need all of them to explain why you started a war over a woman who was only asked a question," Torben said.
He said it with no heat in his voice at all.
Heath's jaw worked.
He looked at his enforcers, but the men studied the grass.
He looked at his mother, and Verity touched his sleeve and shook her head very slightly.
He looked at Imogen, who had a hand over her mouth.
