Chapter 6: The Terms

By the end of dinner, Maisy had examined four knees, one rotten tooth and a man's opinion of his own blood pressure.

"You can't just treat people at the table," I said.

"They keep offering stew," Maisy said. "I'm being paid in stew."

The man with the large beard raised his bowl to her.

The broad woman with the gray braid, who turned out to be Blackfern's beta, put me in a small room off the kitchen.

It had a narrow bed with a quilt and a window that looked at the ridge.

"Torben's mother's," she said. "She made the quilt. Don't tell him I told you where the good towels are."

I thanked her, and she waved it away and went back to her pots.

I didn't undress.

I sat on the edge of the bed and looked at the quilt for a long time.

A knock came at the door frame.

Torben stood there, holding a jar.

"Maisy said you'd need salve," he said. "For the wrist."

"Maisy can give me salve."

"Maisy's asleep at the table."

"She is not," I said, and then I laughed, because he had stepped aside and I could see her through the kitchen door, asleep with her cheek on her arm.

Torben didn't smile, but his eyes did.

I held out my wrist, and he crossed the room and sat on the other end of the bed.

He didn't touch me at first.

He unscrewed the lid and set it on his knee.

"Terms," he said.

"What?"

"Before I put a hand on you. You're in my house, and you've had a worse night than most people have in a year." His voice was even. "So I'd like terms."
