Chapter 14: Brothers

Samson's POV

My brother was sitting on the top step outside my door at seven in the morning.

He wore a charcoal suit and held two paper cups of coffee.

He stood up when he saw me, and smiled.

"You look terrible," Brice said.

I had spent the night on a porch with a gun on my belt, and a rideshare had just dropped me home.

I looked at his left wrist.

It was bare.

There was a pale strip of skin there, where a watch had sat every day for three years.

"Where's the watch?" I said.

"At the jeweler. The crystal cracked." He held out a coffee. "Aren't you going to let me in?"

"No."

"Samson."

"Say what you came to say, in the hall."

He lowered the cup.

I watched him decide to be sad.

It took him two seconds, and it was perfect.

"I came to say I'm sorry," he said. "I was wrong to let it go this long between us. Dad's wrong too. He knows it."

"He doesn't."

"She's in a bad place, Samson. I know you think I'm the villain here."

"I think you slept with her best friend."

"I did," he said. "I'm ashamed of it. But what she's doing now is grief, and it's grief for her mother, not for me. She is building a case out of nothing, and you're feeding it."

"I'm not feeding anything."

"You were at her house all night."

"Who told you that?"

"My building has cameras too, and your car is in her mother's driveway." He tilted his head. "She's a beautiful woman, and she's alone, and you're a lonely man who once failed her. I understand it. I do."

My hand closed into a fist behind my back.

"Stay out of this," I said.

"Out of what? Of my own life?" He smiled again. "She played a recording of me to eighty partners and the whole internet. Do you know what that does to a career?"
