Chapter 21: What Was Left

Victoria's POV

The morgue was at the end of a long green hallway, behind two steel doors with square windows.

I stood in front of them at three in the morning, in my black dress, with my hand flat on the cold metal.

I did not push.

Brice was on the other side, on a table, under a sheet.

I had slept beside that man for four years.

I wanted to look at his face, and I wanted to spit on it, and I could not make my arm move.

Samson stood a few feet behind me with blood dried on his cuffs.

"You don't have to go in," he said.

"I know."

"He said to tell you the safe is open. The code is your birthday."

"Why would he say that?"

"I don't know."

I took my hand off the door.

Footsteps came fast down the corridor behind us.

The old man walked with a cane now, in a rumpled suit, with two lawyers hurrying at his back.

He had been a judge for thirty years, and he walked down that hall without slowing.

He did not look at Samson.

He looked at me.

"You," he said.

Two nurses stopped at their station to listen.

"You killed him," the old man said. His voice shook with rage. "You stood in front of four hundred people and tore my son apart, and he ran, and now he is dead. Are you happy? Is this what you wanted?"

"Sir," said one of the lawyers.

"Be quiet." He raised the cane at me. "You are a cold, vengeful girl, and you have murdered the best of my sons."

I opened my mouth.

I never got to speak.

"No," Samson said.
