Chapter 8: Route 9 Bus 4417

Samson's POV

The urgent care took her in at half past midnight, and the doctor put a dozen stitches in the heel of her hand.

She did not look at the needle.

She looked at me.

I stood beside the bed with my arms crossed and tried to look like a man who was not holding his breath.

She squeezed my fingers once, on the sixth stitch.

I let her.

Back at her mother's house at two in the morning, she sat on the old plaid sofa with her bandaged hand in her lap and said she was not tired.

She was asleep in four minutes.

Her head went back against the cushion and her mouth came open a little, and I stood over her in the dark living room for longer than I should have.

I took the blanket off the armchair and laid it over her.

She said something in her sleep that sounded like Mom, and my chest hurt.

Three years ago I had stood in this house and promised her a thing I could not deliver.

I had said it because she was twenty-four years old and shaking, and I had meant it with everything I had.

Then the warrant came back with the wrong address.

I knew it was wrong the minute I saw it.

I had typed 1428.

The night before the hearing, my brother had come to my apartment with a six-pack and an apology for missing my birthday.

We had sat at my kitchen table.

I had printed the affidavit there to read it over.

I left the room for ten minutes to take a call from the lab.

In the morning the printout in my folder said 1482.

I told Brice I knew what he had done.

He told me I was exhausted.

I took it to our father, who had been a judge for thirty years, and our father looked at me over his glasses and said, "Brice is the best of us, and you will not say it again."
