Chapter 17: Already Married
"Ramsey."
He was awake before I said it twice.
I turned the phone so he could see.
We watched it sitting up against the iron bedstead, the blue quilt around our knees.
A clerk in a grey cardigan read the words.
Kyla held a paper up to the lens.
A Kenyan marriage certificate, with both their names and a stamp in purple ink.
She leaned into the lens.
"Nobody back home knows," she said, delighted. "Not even Mom. Cut that, obviously."
The clip ended.
Ramsey took the phone out of my hand and played it again.
I watched his face instead of the screen.
When it ended he set the phone face down on the quilt.
"He's married," I said.
"Twenty months."
"Then what does he need me for? He's already got a wife. He's got his eight million."
"No, he doesn't." Ramsey rubbed his face. "My brother wrote the clause the year Dylan turned twenty. Married by thirty, in front of his mother. He was afraid the boy would elope with some girl on a beach."
