Ronan answered on the fourth ring and put the phone on speaker.

"Carrington."

"Is my wife there?" Landon asked.

"Your ex-wife is in my bed, and she's tired. What do you want?"

I stared at him.

He looked back at me, steady, and didn't take it back.

There was a silence on the line, long enough that I heard a clock tick somewhere in Landon's house.

"I'm not calling to fight," Landon said at last. His voice was rough. "My mother is on a plane to her place in Westbrook. I told her not to come back. I want Jessa to know."

I leaned toward the phone.

"I heard you, Landon."

"The house is empty. Kendra's in the guest room. I told her tonight."

"Told her what?"

"That I should have asked you before I asked her anything."

It was almost an apology.

It was also late, and he was saying it at midnight to the man he was trying to outbid.

"Goodnight, Landon," I said, and Ronan ended the call.

He put the phone face down on the nightstand.

"He sounded sorry," I said.

"He sounded like a man who wants the house back."

"Both can be true."

"They usually are." He pulled me down against his side, and his hand settled on my back. "Sleep. We'll deal with him in daylight."

In the morning he had made toast, badly, and burned the second slice.

He set it on the bed in front of me with a glass of orange juice and a look so serious that I laughed until I had to put my hand over my mouth.

"What?"

"The great Ronan Keyes. Burned toast."

"I've never made it for anyone."

"I can tell."

He sat down on the edge of the mattress, and kissed me, and it was not a polite kiss.
