Chapter 17: Refill
Constance Aldrich came home from the hospital on a Thursday, and by Thursday evening she had summoned me to the house on Beacon Hill by sending her driver to the bar.
Fiona read the note over my shoulder.
"Don't go," she said.
"I'm going."
"She'll eat you alive."
"She's sixty-one and has a heart condition."
"That's how she'll do it. She'll die dramatically on your carpet."
I went.
The Aldrich house was five floors of dark wood and darker portraits.
Weston's mother received me in the library with a blanket over her knees and a pot of tea she did not pour.
Weston was not there.
I had asked the driver to tell him I would come alone.
"Sit," she said.
I sat.
"My son tells me he is not going to marry Blythe Carrington."
"I heard."
"He tells me he has tied himself to you, in full view of a camera."
"He did that himself."
"He did it for you." She looked down at her tea. "I read about it this morning in the newspaper, like a stranger."
