Belle's POV

On Halloween night, three hundred people came to Chippewa Square with lanterns, and I had not told a single one of them where to stand.

Frankie had done it.

Four days earlier, on a Monday, I'd been fired by text message.

By Monday supper my aunt had typed out one post on the marina's page with two fingers.

*FREE GHOST TOUR. Halloween. 9 p.m. Chippewa Square. Led by the girl from the video. Bring a light.*

By nine o'clock the square was full.

There were kids in costumes, couples with paper cups, and the whole Thunderbolt crowd in oilskins.

A row of old women from the Presbyterian church each held a battery candle.

Someone shouted, "Where's the ring?"

The crowd laughed.

I stepped up on the base of the Oglethorpe statue so they could see me, and I held up my hand for quiet.

"The ring," I said, "is at the bottom of a glass of chardonnay in Ardsley Park. Keep your voices down. There are ghosts."

They roared.

I put my own lantern on the pedestal and began.
