Chapter 7: The Rail

Brendan's POV

She stood at the deck rail in nothing but my shirt.

I stood behind her with my hands on the wood on either side of hers.

The sky over the Atlantic was going from black to gray.

The lighthouse down the beach swept its beam across the dune grass every few seconds.

Below us the tide was coming in, and the sound of it filled up everything.

"Cold?" I said.

"Not with you there."

I put my mouth on the side of her neck.

She tipped her head to give me room.

Her hair was frizzy from the salt air and smelled of the sea and the soap from the shower we'd had at midnight.

She was twenty-two years old.

I thought about that every time I looked at her, and each time I put the thought away.

She'd told me what she wanted, plainly and out loud, and she was a grown woman.

I was the one who had to be careful.

I unbuttoned the shirt from the bottom, one button at a time, and she stood still and let me.

When it fell open I slid my hand across her stomach and up and cupped her breast.

She leaned back against my chest with a sigh.

Her skin was freckled everywhere.

I hadn't known that about her on the first night, with the lights low and the rain on the window.

Here in the pale light I could see it all down her shoulders and her back, a scatter of gold on white.

I wanted to put my mouth on every one.

I did, starting at the nape of her neck.

She made a small, pleased noise.

"You're taking your time," she said.

"I've got all morning," I said.

"I've got a tour at nine tonight."

"Then we've got all day."

I kissed down her spine to the small of her back, with my hands on her hips.
