Chapter 6: Page One
At eleven on Sunday night I found a horse-drawn carriage waiting at the corner of Chippewa Square with my name on its booking sheet.
It said *Waters, private tour for two*, and under that, in a left-slanting hand, *B.*
My boss owned the company and had never let me have a night off.
He was standing by the curb with his hands behind his back and no expression on his face.
"Some gentleman paid triple," he said. "Don't make me regret it."
Brendan sat in the back of the carriage with a plaid lap blanket across his knees.
He had on a dark sweater and dark trousers, and the gap in his eyebrow looked white in the lamplight.
I climbed up beside him and the driver clicked his tongue, and the horse started down Bull Street at a walk.
"Monahan," I said.
He didn't say anything.
"Brendan Monahan, forty-four, of Monahan Marine Group. It was on page one of the business section next to a picture of you squinting. A regular at the shack read me a second article. They say you're worth four billion dollars."
"It's in the paper," he said. "I didn't pay for it."
"You said no last names," I reminded him.
"I said it, and I kept it. I didn't give you mine."
"You let me read it in the Sunday news."
"I knew you would," he said. "I was hoping for one more night first."
I turned to look at him.
His face was calm, but he was looking down at his hands on the blanket.
"One more night of what?" I asked.
"Of being a man you hadn't read about."
I opened my mouth to be angry, and there wasn't anything there.
"You could have said."
"I could have."
"Well, then," I said, and I settled back against the leather. "Break your own rules, and see what I do."
"What do you do?"
"I give the tour," I said. "You paid triple."
So I gave it.
I used my best voice, the low, dry one that gets forty tourists to stop eating their pralines.
"On your left," I said, "is the Savannah Theatre, which has burned and been rebuilt more than once. The staff say that somebody walks the balcony in a long coat, and nobody has ever seen his face."
