Chapter 20: The Group Chat

Gabe had shown me her text in the dark, and I had made him read it twice.

"She wants you to cancel," I said. "She wants the party moved to wherever you are."

"I'm not canceling."

"Then leave the light on," I said. "Just not for her."

He had slept in the chair by his front window with the porch bulb burning, and I had gone home at dawn to dress.

Colby was sitting on my porch step at eight on Saturday morning, with his hands hanging between his knees.

He hadn't shaved. His quarter-zip was inside out.

I stood in the doorway in Gabe's old T-shirt and didn't open the screen.

"I'm alone," he said. "No phone going. I'll leave if you tell me to."

"Say what you came to say."

"Tori took the account." He gave a short laugh. "At eleven last night she changed the password and drove to Wenatchee. Brent went with her. Brent said if I'd just let Kendra run things we'd still have sponsors."

"The sponsors left because you lied."

"They left because of your emails." He rubbed his face. "That's fair. That's the first fair thing that's happened to me in a month."

I stayed where I was.

"I read it, Brooke," he said. "The whole chat. The Table Four chat."

"You were in it."

"I was in it for a year. I scrolled past it. I thought it was jokes." He took out his phone and held it up without looking at it. "Last night I went back to the beginning. Brent. Tori. Kendra. They were planning your wrong address from March."
