Chapter 11: The Rule

Willa's POV

I opened the door before he could knock.

I had not moved from the other side of it.

Rafe stood on the landing with one hand raised, and he looked caught.

"I left a roll of drawings," he said.

"You're a terrible liar."

"I've been told."

The stairwell light buzzed over his head.

"You said I had a rule," I said. "A desk, and nothing else."

"I did say that. Yes."

"Then say it back to me. Tell me what's in the rule."

His jaw moved.

"Nothing between us but a desk," he said. "Your rule, Willa. I've been very good about it."

"You have."

I took hold of his shirt and pulled him over the threshold.

He came in fast.

He shut the door with his heel and had me against it before the latch caught.

His mouth was on mine, and it wasn't careful anymore.

I heard myself make a sound I didn't recognize.

His hands went into my hair, and the pencil fell and rolled across the floor.

"Tell me to stop," he said against my mouth.

"No."

"Willa."

"I'm not asking you for a favor," I said. "I'm telling you what I want."

I felt him stop breathing for a moment.

Then he kissed me again, slower, deeper, with his thumb along my jaw.

I had never been kissed like that.

For six years I had been kissed politely.

I got my hands under his shirt and felt the heat of his back, and he said something low in his throat that I felt in my belly.

"Where," he said.

"Bedroom."

He picked me up.

I wrapped my legs around his waist, and he carried me through the dark flat and set me down on the edge of the bed.

Then he knelt on the floor in front of me and looked up.

"The leaflet said two weeks," I said. "It's been thirteen days. The bleeding stopped on the ninth."

I hadn't known I was going to say it.

He didn't flinch.

"Then we go at your pace," he said. "Whatever that is. And you tell me the second it isn't."

My throat closed.

"Nobody has ever said that to me."

"I'm saying it now."

I pulled him up by the collar and kissed him until he laughed against my mouth.

He undid the buttons of my blouse one at a time, with his eyes on my face.

He took too long.

I told him so.

"I'm being thorough."

"You're being slow."

"I've waited ten days." He slipped the blouse off my shoulders and pressed his mouth to the hollow of my neck. "I'm going to be slow."

I shivered.

He found the clasp of my bra and opened it, and when he drew it away he looked at me for a long moment.
