Chapter 10: Mine
Noah reached him before anyone else did and stopped at his side.
He did not say anything.
He put one hand flat on the middle of Raven's back and left it there.
Raven breathed in, and the whole floor of the arena seemed to steady under his feet.
He walked to the scorer's table.
Thompson was still holding the microphone, and Raven put out his hand for it, and after a moment Thompson gave it to him.
Nobody had ever taken anything from Thompson that easily.
"Yes," Raven said.
His voice filled the arena, steadier than he had expected.
"It's true. I'm an omega. I became one in the first winter I was here, and I didn't know what to do, so I told no one and wore a sticker and kept playing."
He lifted his head.
"On Saturday I scored thirty-one points. I was an omega for every one of them."
Somebody in the stands whooped, high and brief.
The arena stayed loud, confused and rumbling.
"Section 4.1," Thompson said, to the room.
"Which page?" shouted somebody.
"Fourteen!"
"The booklet's three pages!"
The point guard stood up from the bench.
He reached up, found the sticker on his own neck, peeled it, and stuck it down again, firm, in plain sight.
The centre did the same on his forehead.
Then the freshman, then four more, a row of flesh-coloured patches along the bench, and nobody said a word about it.
Raven looked at them and could not speak.
Noah stepped up beside him.
He took the microphone out of Raven's hand very gently, because Raven was not letting go on his own.
"I'm Noah Jones," he said. "I work in the clinic. I'm the team's medic."
