Chapter 20: The Last Box

Noah watched Raven climb the stairs of the arena with a silver trophy on his hip, and his knees stopped working.

Around him the crowd was still shouting, and nobody had worked out yet that something else was happening.

Gracy had.

She had her hand locked around Noah's forearm and was whispering, "Oh, oh, oh," in a very small voice.

Benjamin had stopped taking photographs and was holding his phone against his chest with both hands.

Raven reached their row and stopped one step below it.

He was drenched in sweat, with his jersey stuck to him.

He looked at Noah and nobody else in the building.

"I have a clinical question," he said.

The people in the next seats were beginning to turn around.

"Raven," said Noah.

"Hold on. I'm not fine."

Noah laughed, and it came out wet.

"Not counted," he said.

"I know. I've been practising." Raven held out the trophy with both hands, and tipped it toward him.

Inside the silver cup lay a folded sheet of paper, and a small black box on top of it.

Noah took the paper out with shaking fingers.

It was a clinic intake form, filled in with a pen, in Raven's heavy handwriting.

Name: Raven Grandwell.

Secondary: Omega. Proud.

Symptoms: Cannot stop looking at one man.

At the bottom, where the line for marital status usually stood, Raven had written a single sentence.

Married to: ______ (Noah Jones, if he'll have me.)

Noah read it three times.

The people around them had gone completely silent, and he could hear the arena's air conditioning.
