Chapter 8: The Couch

We were out of the Winfield house by six.

The old man's two men carried Jerome's duffel to the curb, and one of them shut the car door on us without a word.

I took my suitcases from the guest wing myself.

"The allowance stays, Miss Fenn," the old man had said in the hall. "The baby is a Winfield, and I keep what is mine."

"Then pay it," I'd told him. "And I'll keep what's mine."

He had let me leave, which scared me more than if he hadn't.

In the car, Jerome sat with his hands on his knees and watched the stone wall slide past the window.

He didn't say anything until we hit the highway.

"I lost the room."

"You lost a room?" I said. "You lost a girlfriend and a seat on a family's mailing list. And you did it on a microphone."

"I know."

"Why did you say yes?"

He kept looking at the road.

"At the luncheon I asked what you'd lose, and you said yes before I finished."

"What I lose," said Jerome, "is nothing I can't live without. I'm sitting in a car with you."

It wasn't a real answer.

I put my hand on his, and he turned his over and held it.

Dot was on the stoop with her glasses on her head and a quilt over her arm.

She looked at Jerome's duffel, then at his face, then at mine.

"I made up the couch," she said. "It's a good couch. It's upstairs, in your apartment, which is not my business, but I sleep very lightly and the floor is thin."

"Dot."

"I'm sixty-three," she said. "Not blind."

Jerome picked up my suitcases before I could stop him.

"Thank you, Mrs. MacPhee."

"Dot. And you may call me Mrs. MacPhee after you've earned it."
