Chapter 7: The Luncheon
The luncheon was in a hotel ballroom with white roses on every table and a string quartet by the stage.
Two hundred women in good suits sat under a banner that said The Winfield Foundation: Families First.
I wore the green dress.
Table 19 was in the back, beside the service door, with a florist, two drivers and a caterer's assistant eating bread rolls.
A driver gave me his chair.
"I like your dress," said the florist. "You look like somebody."
"I'm just a girl who types," I said, and ate a roll.
Jerome found me before the soup.
He came down the side aisle in a dark suit and took the empty seat at Table 19.
"Margo's looking for you," I said.
"Margo's at the head table, and she's looking at you."
"I've got something to ask."
"Ask."
I took a breath.
"She'll claim you on that stage today. She does it at every event. Everyone in this room thinks you're hers." I looked at him. "If we're doing this, we do it where all of them can see. In front of everyone, or the deal's off."
He didn't answer right away.
He looked across the ballroom at the head table, where Margo sat in a pale blue suit beside the mayor's wife, laughing at something.
"What happens to you if I don't?" he asked.
"I go back to my apartment. You go back to her. We both pretend it never happened."
It was a bluff, and I could see he knew it.
"That's not what I asked," Jerome said quietly. "I asked what happens to you."
The question stopped me for a second.
Nobody had asked me that in eleven months.
"Do it," I said.
"All right."
At the head table, a woman tapped a spoon on a water glass.
