Chapter 6: Swollen Feet
The breakfast room had a long table, and Margo had already seated herself at the head of it, in her father's chair.
"Sit anywhere," she said. "Except there, that's Tate's. And there, that's Father's. And there."
I sat by the window.
A maid put down eggs, toast and a plate of fruit with a card tucked beside it.
"Saturday is the Foundation luncheon," Margo said. "Two hundred women, a string quartet, and the mayor's wife. You're invited, of course. Father insisted."
I turned the card over.
It said Table 19.
The table had a small printed note underneath: Staff and Staff Guests.
"I thought you'd be more comfortable with your own kind," said Margo.
"I'll be wearing green."
"I'm sure your landlady's dead sister's dress will be a hit."
I put the card in my pocket without looking at her.
I had never told her whose dress it was.
I had known these people for three days, and they had already read everything I'd ever signed.
After breakfast I walked down the flagstone path to the guest house.
The gate was iron, and the nurse behind it was a small woman in white shoes with a ring of keys on her belt.
"I'm Willa," I said. "I was at the hospital on Tuesday. I'd like to say hello to Mrs. Winfield."
"Mrs. Winfield isn't to have visitors."
"I'm not here to hurt her. I only want to tell her I didn't know."
The nurse's eyes went to the upstairs window and back.
For half a second something moved in her face, and it wasn't an order.
"I'm sorry," she said quietly. "Those are my instructions."
