Chapter 25: Two Weeks
The loft over the pilot office had one big room, a bed in the corner, and a window that looked straight onto the river.
I climbed the stairs on a Thursday night, nine days after the ruling, with my coat still on.
I had not planned to come.
I had planned to stay at Verity's, finish the paperwork for my leave at the clinic, and fly north on Sunday with my son.
But Linus had fallen asleep in the guest room with the compass in his fist.
Posey had looked at me over the dishes and said, "Go see the drawer."
"What drawer?"
"The one you've been not asking about for nine days."
So I went.
Lachlan opened the door in a grey sweater with the sleeves pushed up.
He had been cooking.
The loft smelled of garlic and onions, and a pot steamed on a two-burner stove.
"You came," he said.
"I came for the paper."
"Of course."
He stepped back to let me in.
