Chapter 20: Colt's POV: The Spotlight
Colt's POV
At seven o'clock the arena was black from the floor to the roof, and forty thousand people were shouting for a light.
I stood in the tunnel with my guitar on my back and my hands cold.
Somewhere behind me, a diesel engine coughed twice and caught.
"That's the truck generator," the stage manager shouted over it. "It'll run the sound board and one follow spot. Nothing else. No screens, no lights, no band monitors."
"One spot is plenty."
"Mr. Hargis, the band is not going to be able to hear..."
"Then they'll have to listen."
He stared at me.
Then he ran to do it.
Linnea was standing at the end of the tunnel in the gray cardigan she wore to every show, with Birdie's hand in one of hers and Gus's in the other.
A stagehand in a black shirt stood behind them to keep the cables clear.
She did not say anything about the dark.
She reached up, straightened my collar, and let her fingers rest there on my neck for a second.
"I'm going first," I said.
"Colt, the plan is that I..."
"I know the plan."
"I'm the one who's supposed to say it."
"You've been saying it for six years," I said. "Every song you ever wrote said it. Let me be the one who says it out loud."
She looked at me for a long moment.
Then she let go of my collar.
"Go," she said.
I walked out into the black.
The crowd saw me as a shape at first, a man with a guitar, and the noise they made was confused and hungry and angry all at once.
The follow spot snapped on over my head.
