Chapter 13: The Necklace
I pulled on Roan's shirt and my jeans and was at the gate in under two minutes.
The two detectives stood outside the bars in the grey light, a woman with a notebook and a man with a coffee he hadn't touched.
Behind them a patrol car idled with its lights off.
"Sutton Landry?" the woman said.
"Yes."
"Ma'am, a Mrs. Landry on Maple Court filed a report last night," the woman said.
"She says you took a gold necklace off her daughter on Sunday and walked out with it."
I laughed.
I couldn't help it, it came out of me.
"Is that funny, ma'am?" the man asked.
"It's the first thing she's gotten right," I said. "I did take it off her daughter's neck."
Roan came down the gravel behind me, pulling a jacket over a bare chest.
He stopped at my shoulder and said nothing at all.
The woman's eyes went from him to me and back again.
"Mr. Draper," she said, in the voice of somebody who had grown up in this town.
"Detective."
"We'd like to see the necklace."
I undid the clasp and held the chain out on my open palm.
The gold hummingbird lay there, small as a thumbnail, with its wings swept back.
