Chapter 10: No One's Secret
Clayton was waiting at the clinic gate when we came down the hill.
He had not slept.
His eyes were red, and the papers were in his hand, crumpled flat.
Sixty people were already in the yard for the morning queue.
"Romy," he said, and his voice cracked. "Tell me it's not what it looks like."
"It's what it looks like."
"You spent the night with him."
"Yes."
"You're my wife."
"On paper," I said. "You made sure of that."
A woman in the queue with a baby on her back said something to her neighbor in Dholuo, and her neighbor nodded gravely.
Clayton turned to Alec.
"You," he said. "You knew. You knew she was married and you took advantage of her."
"I knew she was married," Alec said. "I waited three years."
"That's disgusting."
"I'm told it's patience."
Wanjiru, at the clinic door, folded her arms and did not hide how much she was enjoying this.
"She's not available," Clayton said, louder. "She's my wife, and you have a rule. Everybody knows you have a rule. Your whole staff knows it. Nobody on this compound dates anybody on this compound."
"That's right," Alec said.
"So you're a hypocrite."
"I made that rule six years ago."
"Why?"
Alec looked past Clayton at the sixty people in the yard.
"Because a doctor once hid a relationship with a nurse here," he said. "She thought it was easier. It wasn't. The nurse left, and the clinic lost a year of trust, and I lost the person I should have married."
The yard was very quiet.
