Chapter 11: The Key

I called my mother that night from the clinic's satellite phone, with the door closed.

Alec sat on the other side of the pharmacy table and stayed there.

"Mom, did you give Marissa a tin?"

"What tin?"

"The biscuit tin with the lighthouse. It was in the hall closet, under the winter coats."

"I haven't opened that closet since March," my mother said. "That's when Marissa borrowed the coats for her church drive. She was up on the step stool for twenty minutes. Why?"

"Did she ask you about my hospital things?"

"She asked if you'd kept anything from the night you were sick. I said I didn't know."

"Did you tell her what happened?"

"Rosemary, I've never told her anything about that night. You made me promise."

"I know," I said.

"I only told Clayton to ask you about the bathroom, because it was all I could say without breaking my word to you," my mother said. "That's all I've ever said to anyone."

I put my hand over my eyes.

"Mom, I love you. I'm going to call tomorrow. Don't give Marissa anything else. Don't let her read you any more letters."

"Rosemary, what is going on?"

"I'm going to find out," I said.

I put the phone down.

The pharmacy was quiet, and the lamp hummed.

Alec had not asked me a single question in ten minutes, and I knew what it cost him.

"Marissa said she knew," I said. "She said she'd known for three years. That she'd seen the date on the bracelet."
